Most activities that PC's are used for need adequate graphics capability. Windows XP makes extensive use of graphics compared to the first version of windows. Without high-resolution graphics it would look bland and anemic. Here are some basic graphics trouble shooting tips.

Common problems and possible solutions.

1. Have you made sure the monitor is plugged into the computers VGA socket?

Check every connection between the PC and the monitor, check that none of the pins are bent in the plug at the end of the monitors connection to the PC.

2. Is the colour depth suitable to the target application?

Most applications require a minimum number of colours to be displayed on the screen. If the colour depth is too low you will find that the application will either look strange or will not work. To get to the screen properties, right click on the windows desktop and select 'properties.

3. Have you got the correct directx drivers installed?

Directx is the standard created by Microsoft to help multimedia applications work correctly. the Directx software is updated by individual graphics card manufacturers to improve the performance and the compatibility software and their products.

4. Is the monitor switched on?

If the monitor is not working, try another power lead which you know will work.

5. Is the hardware acceleration affecting the graphics card performance?

Go to the display properties screen, you will find it also has advanced functions. From within these advanced functions you may be able to reduce the amount of hardware acceleration offered by the graphics card. This hardware acceleration can affect the reliability of the video device in older applications.
