Protecting the PSU. (Power Supply Unit)

The PSU is basically a transformer, converting mains voltage to the 5, 9, or 12 volts used by the system unit. Irregular mains supply like lightening or blackouts can damage the PSU and the connected computer equipment. A UPS (uninterruptible power supply) or surge protector can help protect systems and provide power for a short time in the event of a power cut. An alternative to a UPS is a surge resistant extension plug, they come in different sizes and can also protect your modems phone line as well.

Turning off your PC

Some people believe that their PC needs to be tuned off when it is not in use, in fact this is just a myth, PC systems are actually designed to be left on permanently, when idle they will automatically cut down on the power they draw. The monitor however should always be switched off if it is not in use, as it does use a lot of electricity.

What are firewalls?

Firewalls protect computer systems from intrusion and attack from outsiders.

Is your computer hot?

Electronics do get hot, but they are designed to dissipate heat, overheating can cause errors. If your computer seems to be overheating turn it off and get it fixed. The transformers will get warm but should never be hot, if they are hot it means they are faulty and need to be replaced. The room temperature can also affect your PC, if where your computer sits is more than 80°c turn it off, the hotter the room is the more likely the computer is to malfunction.
