Fault or Quirk of Windows

When you notice windows acting a little strange it doesn't necessarily mean there is something wrong with the hardware, before opening up your PC to check the hardware, try to find out if it is just a windows 'quirk' causing the problem. These 'quirks' can sometimes be caused by windows performing a house keeping task or demonstrating a feature. To diagnose faults you will need to know a few common windows operations which can appear to be errors.

Your number pad doesn't work.

When you type in the numbers, does the cursor jump around the page, or are characters being deleted? Check the numlock light and the scroll lock, there is a good chance that these may have been turned on/off by mistake, and the keys have taken on a different function.

Character overwriting when typing

When you place the cursor in the middle of a sentence to add some text, usually the remainder of the sentence gets pushed along by the text you type. If you find the text you type replaces the existing text character by character, you may have pressed the insert key by mistake. The insert key changes the text mode to over type mode, to return everything to normal just press the insert button again.

Missing tool bar

If your tool bar mysteriously disappears, it probably means you have selected the wrong menu option, or pressed the wrong key combination. To restore your missing tool bar simply look at the view menu and select 'toolbar' then select which ones you want to appear on your screen.
